The Chitose-class assault ships of the Yamatai Imperial Navy are designed to deploy an SNLF Expeditionary Unit from space to land using dropships, Suisei-class landers and Type-31Yu Kujira transport aerospacecraft, supported by Type-7 Reppu and Type-34 Suzume aerospacecraft and Type-66 Wadatsumi gunships. The assault ships are equipped fully to support groundside SNLF operations, acting as transports, orbital command and control centres, mobile aerospacecraft bases and space-to-ground ordnance platforms.
The size of small carriers, the Chitose-class ships are also heavily armed and armoured, and are capable of holding off medium-intensity enemy attacks on their own.
Design[]
Landing operations[]
The Chitose-class can support space-to-ground landings in two forms, by dropship for combat zone insertion and by landers for general troop landings into secured landing sites. Each ship carries six Suisei-class landing ships, 16 Type-31Yu Kujira aerospace transport craft, 24 Ryuusei-class dropships and 12 Saiun-class dropships, as well as four Egusa-cllass shuttles for VIP transport and liaison purposes. The ship also carries 12 Type-66 Wadatsumi gunships to provide immediate close air support for the SNLF troops once they enter the landing zone. The Chitose-class also carries aerospacecraft for air/space superiority and ground-attack missions, including 18 Type-7 Reppu fighters of the necessary configurations and 16 Type-34 Suzume ground-attack fighters.
Each ship is capable of hosting 3,788 personnel of the SNLF, the full strength of an Expeditionary Unit. The Chitose-class can also carry a vast amount of supporting cargo and supplies, as well as the vehicles of the SNLF Expeditionary Unit. These can include around 20 tanks of various types, 75 APCs and IFVs, 24 artillery pieces, 136 trucks, 50 mechs and up to 30 other support vehicles. An internal monorail is used to shift cargo from the cargo holds to the well deck.
Each Chitose-class ship has a hospital with 128 patient beds and 12 operating rooms. An additional 1072 beds can be set up in an "Overflow Casualty Ward" as needed.
Command and control capabilities[]
